Young talent is often hard to come by in the world of professional poker but Annette Obrestad, who lives in Sandnes Norway, is one of the few exceptions. This talented player has been at the tables since she was 15 years old and turning heads ever since.
Starting out in the ranks of the virtual world of online poker, Obrestad quickly climbed the ranks to be a top player. Her online name was often seen at the top of many tournaments where she managed to defeat hundreds of seasoned players for the top honors.
Obrestad played the bulk of her tournaments on the top site Pokerstars, finishing first or second in more than 20 rebuy tournaments in less than a year. This gained her the attention that she obviously deserves as she continued to win hands down despite her tender age.
Moving to the live action play was nothing difficult for this poker prodigy. Just after her 18th birthday she played in the Aurba Classic and finished a very respectable 37th. This is quite an accomplishment for someone known mostly for their prowess in the world of online poker only.
Playing on that success, Obrestad went on to win the first ever World Series of Poker European Championship just after her 19th birthday. Defeating more than 300 players she was awarded more than $2 million for her efforts.
That World Series win broke many records, including the award of a championship bracelet to the youngest player ever. During this tournament she not only defeated but caught the attention of poker great Annie Duke. Duke commented on her blog following the tournament that Obrestad is most certainly going to be one of the best in the business considering her skills at 19.
Many of the players she has defeated in live action play have commented that Obrestad is “terrifying” in her play. She has the ability to never loss her composure during play, even when losing large pots. No emotion can be seen in her face or body.
This makes her an especially dangerous player. Most of the top names in the world have spent years perfecting their appearance and poker face. This comes natural to a young player like Obrestad.
Her reputation is intensified by her claim to have never made a single monetary deposit into an online poker site. The story goes that Obrestad wanted to start playing online poker after her father taught her 5 and 7 card stud. Her mother would not allow her to use her credit card for the deposit so Obrestad signed up for a $9 freeroll and won. She used that money to build the bankroll that she then used to win hundreds of tournaments and cash games all over the internet.
With her intense playing style and flawless form, there is little doubt that Obrestad will one day claim the US World Series of Poker championship and cement her place among the best in poker.
